Introducing Radici Siciliane Virtual Experiences

COVID hit. And hit Italy hard.

We held hope for speedy healing in our prayers. We held hope that as humans we could come together, for each other, and quickly move through the pandemic.

But, because of the fast spreading nature of this virus we had to cancel all three of our 2020 pilgrimages.

These pilgrimages were in partnership with my dear friend and co-creator Francesco, who had invested so much of 2019 in preparing for more and more gatherings; a van, a license, and many hours coming together despite the time difference and devoted to co-creating transformational experiences on ancestral land.

This pandemic really affected him, as it did so many folks on Sicily. This is an island of tourism. People go there to be with the land, the sea, the food, the wine, the beautiful and warm and welcoming ways of the people. We go there for a unique kind of togetherness, an anti-tourist, open to learn and receive the magic of the island.

After thinking “it will be gone soon enough” felt like a pipe dream, we decided that we would do what we could to support the dream of these very roots-based, transformational pilgrimages —— we would bring them to you, virtually, as best as we could.

We plan on rolling out a variety of experiences, from cooking, to basketweaving, to embroidery, all the food and folk ways of the land. They will be light, fun, educational, connective and focused on weaving community while supporting our beloveds in Sicily (all funds from these classes go straight to Sicily and Radici Siciliane keeps none except for a % to donate here to indigenous grassroots mutual aid funds).

More about Chef Sciurca:

My name is Giuseppe Sciurca, I was born in Petralia Sottana (PA) on March 13th 1976, and I live in Termini Imerese.

Thanks to my mother Angela's passion for cooking, from an early age I had the opportunity to learn about typical Sicilian dishes and recipes ranging from the Madonie (mother's area of origin) to the maritime areas.

Thanks to this knowledge and the passion that was born, in 2003 after about 5 years of seasonal work experience in the restaurant world, I open my first restaurant in Termini Imerese: “La Lupa ghiotta”.  During this period I strengthen my experience in the kitchen by supporting my mother and perfecting myself by attending various refresher courses.

I refine my kitchen in which typical Sicilian cuisine reigns supreme, often reinterpreted in a modern key with the help of fusion between sea and mountains.  In 2014 I open a new restaurant in Termini Imerese: the "Napèe", where I offer typical cuisine with zero km products.  In 2015 I was invited to the EXPO in Milan, where on behalf of the GAL MADONIE I prepare products of the Madonite cuisine in the Mediterranean bio cluster;  among these the Madonita caponatina and the peperonata of anchovies, honey and toasted almonds are very successful.

In 2016, during the filming of the film "Summer time" by the Sicilian comedians Ficarra and Picone, Napèe was chosen as the official restaurant of the entire cast and for 4 months it was a continuous coming and going of VIPs who enjoy my delicacies with pleasure. Among my most famous typical dishes are: fish caponata, pasta with octopus ragout and "caluzzi" (wild brassica), macco di fave e giri (wild beets), pasta with crab meat and shrimp  , fish rolls, meat sauce and many other recipes ranging from meats, vegetables, fish without neglecting sweets, even proposing the "sugar baby".

In addition to various gastronomic events, catering and home chef services for dinners or private parties, I have collaborated with companies such as "Nutritalia" in Trappeto (PA), on behalf of which I prepare traditional tuna fish recipes during very heartfelt events such as that of  national day of vintage cars.

To keep the attention alive we are working on an innovative project of dissemination and promotion of the territory.

We look forward to continuing learning and being in community with you.

love
